In a recent post, we've announced that Links will be participating in the UNICEF charity run, taking place next month on the 26th of November in Hong Kong.
The event is an initiative aiming to eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV in developing countries. For further details of the cause, please visit UNICEF’s main event FAQ page.
Registration for the event has already been closed. If you are interested in contributing to the cause, we’ve set up a sponsorship page on UNICEF in support of Links members participating in the run. We look forward to having your support!
If you have already signed up for the run, below are the top tips on training for the run!
Build up your endurance and stamina by starting training with short distance races. Make sure to also have enough rest, this means getting enough sleep during the weeks prior to the race. Be realistic in your ability, and set a target finish time for yourself to commit to on the day.
On the day of the run
Give yourself enough time to get familiar with the route, rules, regulations and procedures by arriving 1.5 hours before the race begins. UNICEF also recommends to hold out on eating 3 hours before and drinking less 1 hour prior to the event.
Make sure to:
- Stretch and warm up before your run to reduce the chance of injury;
- Avoid a sprint start to conserve your energy;
- Be aware of your surroundings and your own physical condition. If you are facing strong headwinds, adjust your running speed and avoid excessive exhaustion;
- Stay hydrated and drink plenty of fluids 24 hours before the event.
For more tips on how to train and suggested stretching exercises, visit UNICEF’s Charity Run training site.
Our Links team has already started training, share with us your progress over social media or in the comments section below! Here's a photo of Scott Thomson, our Chief Operating Officer taking a run during his last trip earlier this month.
